Guide to UK Units of Alcohol
The UK Government advises that
men drinkers should limit their intake of alcohol
to no more than 3-4 units per day, and women 2-3
units per day. However, there are a number of
important provisos to these guidelines. For example,
a pregnant women and people with certain health
conditions, or on some kinds of medication, should
observe much lower limits, or abstain altogether.
Units of Alcohol in Drinks
A unit of alcohol is a measure of 10ml of pure
alcohol. In the UK, these units can be determined
by using the following formula.
Volume in millilitre (ml) x
% alcohol by volume (ABV)
Then divide by 1000
A UK pint is equivalent to 568ml.
So to find the units in a pint of beer at 3.5%
ABV multiply 568 x 3.5, then divide by 1000 =
1.988 units
Other countries have different
values for units.
UK Driving Units of Alcohol
The legal driving limit in the
UK is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Its
not possible to give this in terms of Units, as
it depends on size of person, how quickly they
drink and other factors.
